Description

Abstract:
In many Vietnamese EFL contexts, non-English-major learners are required to achieve a certain level of English proficiency through standardized tests such as VSTEP. At FND Education Company, a number of English learners are non-English-major students or adult learners who study English for academic requirements, graduation standards, career development, or workplace communication. Although these learners often have clear learning goals, they may face challenges in VSTEP Speaking preparation, including limited speaking practice opportunities, low confidence, uneven proficiency levels, limited vocabulary, weak idea organization, and a lack of individualized learning pathways.
This presentation explores how artificial intelligence can be used to support teachers in designing personalized VSTEP Speaking preparation pathways for non-English-major EFL learners at FND Education Company. The presentation focuses on the process of moving from learner diagnosis to targeted speaking practice. AI tools can assist teachers in identifying learners’ strengths and weaknesses based on speaking samples, self-assessment responses, mock test performance, or classroom observation notes. Based on this diagnostic information, teachers can use AI to generate level-appropriate speaking tasks, topic-based practice plans, vocabulary support, sample responses, feedback prompts, and self-study activities aligned with the structure and requirements of VSTEP Speaking.
The presentation also emphasizes the role of teacher agency in AI-supported test preparation. While AI can generate useful materials and learning suggestions, teachers remain responsible for evaluating accuracy, adapting content to learners’ needs, ensuring alignment with VSTEP Speaking assessment criteria, and maintaining meaningful communicative practice. Ethical and pedagogical considerations, including responsible AI use, learner autonomy, and the risk of over-reliance on AI-generated answers, will also be discussed.
By presenting a practical AI-supported framework based on the teaching context at FND Education Company, this session aims to provide EFL teachers with useful insights into how AI can enhance diagnostic teaching, personalized learning, and speaking readiness for non-English-major learners preparing for VSTEP Speaking.
