Description

Abstract: The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming English language education by offering learners greater access to personalized learning support and immediate feedback. This study explores the implementation of an AI chatbot as a supplementary learning tool in English courses at a Vietnamese higher education institution. The research aims to examine how interactions with the chatbot influence students’ engagement and shape their learning experiences while encouraging responsible and autonomous use of AI. A mixed-methods design will be adopted, combining questionnaire data with students’ reflective journals and semi-structured interviews to gain both quantitative and qualitative insights. Preliminary findings suggest that the AI chatbot increases students’ motivation to participate in learning activities, promotes independent learning, and provides timely support for practicing language skills. At the same time, the study highlights the importance of developing AI literacy so that students can critically evaluate AI-generated responses and use the technology ethically and effectively. The findings are expected to contribute to current discussions on integrating AI into English language education by offering practical recommendations for TESOL practitioners seeking to create engaging, learner-centered, and ethically informed learning environments that enhance both language development and responsible AI use.
