Implementing Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Program requires students to develop self-directed learning and digital competencies; however, many lower secondary students continue to use digital technologies primarily for entertainment rather than learning. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents both opportunities and challenges regarding responsible and effective use. This study investigates how an AI Literacy intervention influences students’ learning agency and digital competencies.
Drawing on AI Literacy and digital competence frameworks, the study developed an AI Thematic Learning Toolkit consisting of eight lessons delivered over four weeks. Students engaged in hands-on learning with Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Reading Coach, and Canva AI to practice prompt engineering, information retrieval, reading development, content creation, and critical evaluation of AI-generated content.
Using a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design, the research involved 200 lower secondary students in experimental and control groups. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, classroom observations, and analyses of student learning products.
Findings revealed significant improvements in AI literacy, learning agency, and digital competence. Notably, 80% of students reported improved learning effectiveness, while 100% successfully applied AI tools to academic tasks. The study suggests that AI Literacy education is a practical and scalable approach to fostering responsible AI use, digital citizenship, and lifelong learning.
