Abstract: This study looks at how the Red Dao ethnic group is portrayed in the TV drama “Di giua troi ruc ro” (2024) and whether it reinforces or challenges stereotypes. The findings show that the series mostly sticks to traditional stereotypes, especially when it comes to gender roles and socio-economic conditions. Red Dao women are shown as hardworking and resilient but also face early marriage, domestic violence, and limited freedom. Meanwhile, Red Dao men are portrayed as patriarchal figures who often avoid responsibility. The show also highlights economic disparities within the community and the struggle between tradition and modern aspirations. Education plays a big role, symbolizing hope for social mobility—this is particularly seen in a mother who sacrifices her belongings to support her daughter’s schooling. While the series brings attention to the struggles of the Red Dao people, it ultimately reinforces existing stereotypes, emphasizing the need for more balanced media portrayals of marginalized groups.
