Description
Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) are reshaping how language learners access input, produce output, receive feedback, and practise beyond classroom boundaries. However, in pre-service English teacher education, technology integration is often framed as tool use rather than pedagogical task design. This conceptual review clarifies the theoretical basis for developing AI-enhanced MALL (AI-MALL) task design competence among pre-service English teachers. Drawing on literature on MALL, AI/GenAI in language education, digital competence, AI literacy, GenAI literacy, and task-based language teaching, the paper proposes an AI-MALL task design competence framework with five dimensions: pedagogical task design, mobile learning orchestration, AI/GenAI integration, assessment and feedback, and responsible AI use. The framework offers a conceptual foundation for elective modules that prepare future English teachers to become learning designers in mobile-AI language learning environments.
