AI Issues in Graduation Papers of English-majoring Students: Situations and Solutions from Lecturers in a Vietnamese University

Abstract
The focus of the research is on measures to deal with AI issues in graduation papers of final-year English-majoring students in the Faculty of Foreign Languages (FOFL), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST). The significance of the paper stems from the fact that a number of FOFL’s linguistic seniors’ graduation papers have been detected with AI usage while there is not yet a common set of guidelines to handle this situation in FOFL. As a result, the research aims to investigate how the problems can be addressed in the context of the Faculty and suggest interventions against the phenomenon in the future. To achieve the objectives, a qualitative design was employed to collect data from a non-structured interview with 40 FOFL’s lecturers (n=40), who were assigned to be thesis supervisors and reviewers. The findings indicate that a variety of methods to check AI content such as proofs of writing process, cross-translation, vocabulary checking and feedback from teaching lecturers can be utilized, and to decide the appropriate actions to take, a case-by-case approach would be implemented to ensure research ethics and avoid AI false detection. In addition, long-term strategies are also suggested to prevent AI usage or guide students to use AI properly without any abuse of it.
