As generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into language education, educators face new opportunities to support intercultural communication without diminishing authentic human interaction. This workshop draws on principles developed through international virtual exchanges to explore how AI can enhance rather than replace collaborative language learning. Participants will analyze examples of AI-supported intercultural activities and work in small groups to design learning tasks that integrate multilingual communication, collaborative inquiry, cultural reflection, and ethical AI use. Workshop activities emphasize learner agency by encouraging participants to evaluate AI-generated translations, identify cultural assumptions, and develop prompts that foster meaningful dialogue among learners from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Participants will create an AI-enhanced virtual exchange activity adaptable to their own educational contexts and discuss strategies for promoting critical AI literacy alongside intercultural competence. The workshop demonstrates that established practices in virtual exchange—including trust building, reflection, negotiation of meaning, and collaborative problem solving—offer valuable pedagogical foundations for human–AI collaboration in language education. The session provides TESOL practitioners with practical models for designing AI-supported learning experiences that strengthen communication, cultural awareness, and responsible technology use.
