Description

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is believed to facilitate learning and teaching by providing educators and learners with immediate support. In the educational field, AI tools have the potential to transform the way people learn, teach, and research. Despite the benefits of AI tools, many concerns and worries remain. While previous studies have investigated the students’ motivations and concerns when using AI tools in general English/ ESP courses, there is a gap in terms of English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) courses, where learners need to meet the discipline-related language demands. Therefore, employing an explanatory sequential design, this study aims to explore what motivates EOP learners to use AI tools in class as well as their concerns when using the tools. The quantitative survey data in this study (N=122) was collected as part of a broader project examining students’ perceptions of AI tools in EOP courses, while this study focuses specifically on motivational factors and learners’ concerns. Qualitative data collection and analysis are currently underway to further explain the quantitative findings. This study is expected to help understand factors encouraging AI implementation in EOP learning as well as identify students’ concerns of AI. The findings may offer pedagogical implications and promote responsible AI use.
