Description

Abstract
In the field of English language teaching and learning, there are new opportunities and challenges for choosing suitable tools for English language teaching and learning because AI tools are tending to be more diverse and widely used. The Vietnamese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) community requires professional and systematic assessments of each AI tool for making informed decisions on their adoption and utilization. To fulfill this need, this study provides a technology review of DOLA ®, a general purpose AI tool developed by SPRING (SG) PTE. LTD., with systematic hands-on evaluation. It critically analyses DOLA's educational applications, pedagogical affordances and practical constraints in terms of the EFL context in Vietnam. In contrast to being an advertisement for DOLA or an attempt to convince teachers, lecturers, researchers and learners that it is better than other AI platforms, the paper presents an evidence-based discussion about its pedagogical potentials and practical limitations for English teachers, lecturers, researchers and learners. The review also presents practical issues of the responsible use of AI in English language teaching and learning. This technology review seeks to offer a balanced assessment of the DOLA in the context of EFL in Vietnam, to assist the readers to make decisions on the adoption of the AI tools, and to join the current discussion on AI literacy in language education.
