Abstract:
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into language education, teachers need practical strategies to use AI tools in ways that support meaningful communication rather than replace human interaction. This hands-on workshop aims to introduce EFL teachers to practical methods for designing AI-supported speaking tasks that promote learners’ fluency, confidence, interaction, and communicative competence.
The workshop is grounded in communicative language teaching and task-based language teaching principles. It focuses on how teachers can use AI tools to generate speaking prompts, role-play situations, discussion questions, information-gap tasks, and level-appropriate classroom materials for different learner groups. Participants will also explore how AI can support task adaptation, learner differentiation, and feedback design while maintaining teacher agency and pedagogical control.
During the workshop, participants will analyze sample AI-generated speaking activities, evaluate their suitability for EFL classrooms, and revise them using clear pedagogical criteria. They will then work individually or in groups to create their own AI-supported speaking task for a specific learner level or teaching context. The session will include guided prompt-writing practice, task design templates, peer sharing, and reflection on responsible AI use in communicative classrooms.
By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to develop practical AI literacy, understand how to design more engaging speaking activities, and leave with adaptable classroom-ready materials. The workshop is particularly relevant for teachers working in language centers and EFL contexts where learners need more opportunities for authentic communication.
